In April 2020, the European Tourism Manifesto alliance sent letters to the European Payment Institutions Federation (EPIF) and European Banking Authority (EBA) requesting for a 12-month delay in the implementation of the Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). The new SCA requirement aims to ensure that electronic payments are performed with multi-factor authentication and should come into force by the end of 2020. Given the unprecedented crisis affecting the travel and tourism sector, the current deadline of implementation needs revision.
